FULL PRE-TRIP INSPECTION

Class A Modernized pre-trip inspection

IN-CAB PRE-TRIP "going off the check list" CDL CLASS A.

OUTSIDE PRE -TRIP "going off check list" From the front to the lenses. (Part#1) CDL CLASS A.

OUTSIDE PRE -TRIP "going off check list" Starting at the lenses. (Part#2) CDL CLASS A.

EXTERNAL LIGHT OPERATIONS CHECK CLASS A OR B

EMERGENCY ROADSIDE STOP CDL CLASS A OR B

Stop/Start Procedure 

For this maneuver you will be asked to pull your vehicle over to the side of the road and stop as though you were going to get out and check something on your vehicle.   

  • As you prepare for the stop:  
  • Check for traffic in both mirrors while moving your head.  
  • Activate your turn signal. Once Stopped:  
  • Vehicle must be parallel to the curb or shoulder of road and safely out of traffic.  
  • Cancel your signal. 
  • Turn on your 4-way flashers.  
  • Shifter in the neutral position.  
  • Set parking brakes.  
  • “I will not block Driveways, Intersections, Fire Hydrants, Critical signs”.  
  • “More than 10 minutes, Place Red Reflective Triangles behind Truck.When instructed to resume:  
  • Check traffic in all mirrors before moving the vehicle.  
  • Turn off 4-way flashers.  
  • Turn on Left turn signal.  
  • Release Parking Brakes.  
  • Check Traffic as you proceed into right lane.  
  • Once you are in the flow of traffic, cancel turn signal. 

HAZMAT RAILROAD CROSSING CDL CLASS A OR B

These are performed during the Road Trip.  


Hazmat/Railroad Stop  

  • Be in the Right lane.  
  • Turn on the 4-way flashers 200-500 feet before the tracks. 
  • Check both mirrors for traffic, “Look and Listen for a train”.  
  • Roll down window, turn off all noise makers, “listen for train”.  
  • Stop between 15 feet and 50 feet before the nearest rail. Don’t set brakes, don’t place  in neutral  
  • Check both mirrors for traffic while stopped.( the stop should be brief)  
  • Makes sure you have “enough outage” on other side of tracks before pulling forward.  
  • Leave in gear until completely across tracks, NO shifting while on tracks.  
  • Cancel 4-way flashers.

SKILLS TEST EXERCISE #1-FORWARD STOP

  1. Exercise 1 – Forward Stop 
  2. You will demonstrate your ability to judge the front of your vehicle during a controlled stop. 
  3. Drive forward  through the alley and stop with the front most part of the vehicle within the box at the end of the alley without going past it. 
  4. You may only stop once. When you have stopped, set your parking brake, shift  to neutral and sound the horn.
  5. Do you have any questions? 

SKILLS TEST EXERCISE #2-STRAIGHT LINE BACKING

Exercise 2 – Straight-Line Backing

  1.  You will demonstrate your ability to back a vehicle in a straight line. 
  2. Pull forward and stop when I raise my  hand. 
  3. Then back straight through the alley until the front of your vehicle has cleared the last set of cones  at the far end of the alley.
  4. You will be scored for pull-ups, encroachments and final position.  
  5. You are allowed one (1) free pull-up and may safely exit the vehicle only one (1) time to check  around the vehicle. 
  6. Set your parking brake, shift to neutral and sound your horn when you have  completed the exercise.
  7.  Do you have any questions? 

SKILLS TEST EXCERCISE #3-FORWARD OFFSET TRACKING

Exercise 3 – Forward Offset Tracking 

  1. You will demonstrate your ability to maneuver a vehicle around other objects while moving forward.  
  2. Drive forward and steer to the left through the opening into the opposite lane, keeping the right most rear  tire between the cone and the line. 
  3. There are NO free back-ups, and you are NOT permitted to exit  the vehicle during this exercise. 
  4. Stop your vehicle when you are parallel to the outer boundary, prior to  or at the cones at the far end of the exercise. 
  5. Then, set your parking brake, shift to neutral and sound  your horn. 
  6. Do you have any questions? 

SKILLS TEST EXERCISE #4-REVERSE OFFSET BACKING

Exercise 4 – Reverse Offset Backing 

  1. You will demonstrate your ability to offset back and park a vehicle at the end of an alley. 
  2. Starting parallel  with the outer boundary, offset back into the alley, bringing the rear most part of your vehicle (other than  unique vehicle parts higher than the door mirrors, such as a bucket truck) within three (3) feet of the rear  of the alley.
  3. Stop with the rear most part of the vehicle (other than unique vehicle parts) in the three (3)  foot box at the end of the alley. 
  4. Your examiner will point out the rear most part of your vehicle when giving instructions for this exercise.  
  5. Your vehicle must be straight within the alley when completed. 
  6. Your vehicle must be completely within  the defined exercise boundaries when completed (other than mirrors or other unique vehicle parts  higher than the door mirrors, such as a bucket truck). 
  7. You may not go beyond the outer boundary line.  
  8. You are allowed two (2) free pull-ups and may exit the vehicle a maximum of two (2) times to check  around the vehicle during this exercise. 
  9. When you have completed the exercise, set your parking  brake, shift to neutral and sound your horn. 
  10. This will inform the examiner you have completed the  exercise and allow them to score your final position.
